Exquisite: Products by rural artisans on display at the exhibition of khadi and village industries in Bangalore on Thursday. Bangalore: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Thursday announced that the State Government would allot a site in the heart of the city for setting up a mall to market products of khadi and village industries. He was responding to a request in this regard by Rehman Khan, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and endorsed by K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Shipping, Surface Transport and National Highways, at the inauguration of “Khadi Utsav” at the Government Boys’ Pre-University College Ground in Malleswaram. There are 414 stalls from 18 States. Inaugurating the month-long “utsav” and Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) golden jubilee celebrations and an exhibition, the Governor said that he would take steps to allot land for the proposed mall as it was a modest request. Mr. Thakur said that such a centre would encourage production of quality goods by khadi and village industries. Mr. Muniyappa said the Centre and State governments should set up a fund for encouraging khadi and village industries and overcoming the unemployment problem in rural areas. The proposed mall should have at least 100 stalls, he added. Chairperson of KVIC Kumudben Joshi, who presided over the function, said the number of institutions under the commission would increase to 4,000 from 1,990 by the end of 11th Plan and the turnover would increase from Rs. 1,000 crore to Rs. 30,000 crore during the period. She released identification boards which will be exhibited in 357 towns to prevent fake khadi products. Mahendra Jain, Chairman of the Karnataka State Khadi and Village Industries Board, said that there were 44,123 units employing three lakh people in the State. Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi, Chief Executive Officer of the board R. Rameshappa, KVIC Southern Regional officer K.K. Guptha and member K.C. Kalappa spoke. M.R. Seetharam, former MLA, was present.
