CHENNAI: Customs officials at the Courier Terminal of the old airport, Meenambakkam, seized three kg of ketamine hydrochloride, valued at Rs. 30 lakh, on Wednesday night.
Commissioner of Customs (Airport) C. Rajan said the officials detained a parcel weighing seven kg, booked by a person from T. Nagar as a gift, and consigned to somebody in Malaysia. On examination the drug was found in six packets covered with carbon paper. The drug, used to tranquilise animals, is being increasingly used as a narcotic, and recent seizures indicate its rising popularity as a club drug, Mr. Rajan said. It could not be exported without a no-objection certificate from the Narcotics Commissioner.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the address given by the person who booked the parcel was fictitious, Mr. Rajan added.
