Speaker for constitutional reforms to make Tamil official language

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Speaker R. Avudiappan has sought early constitutional reforms to make Tamil official language at the national level.

Speaking at the inaugural of an international seminar on ‘Common school system with neighbourhood schools and with mother tongue as medium of instruction and social change,’ organised by the Tamil Department of Loyola College, he explained the efforts being made by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to make Tamil an official language in courts.

The Speaker urged the participants to come out with a strong plea to have constitutional reforms for early implementation of Tamil as the official language at the Centre.

J. Dhanaraj, Head, Tamil Department, said the three-day seminar was organised keeping in view the demand for a common school system and to create greater awareness among the people.

Principal Fr. Albert Muthumalai; Fr. Peter Saviour, secretary; Lakshmi Narayanan, former Puducherry Education Minister; and A. Ramasamy, chairman, Tamil Nadu State Higher Education Centre, spoke.
