Christian council condemns Orissa violence

BANGALORE: The All India Christian Council has condemned the atrocities against Christians in Orissa and has urged the Union and State Governments to extend protection to the community.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Narasing Patel, treasurer, Samata Sainik Dal, said the Orissa government had denied the seriousness of the violence in which four persons were reported killed and 95 churches attacked. “The State police have sided with the perpetrators allowing Hindu fundamentalists to go on the rampage, and the police even dissuaded Christian victims from lodging complaints,” he said.

“There is a complete breakdown of law and order, especially in Kandhamal district where fundamentalists have taken charge,” said M. Mariswamy, convener of Karnataka Dalit Christian Federation.

The council has demanded protection for the villages of Kandhamal and other affected districts and monetary compensation to families of those killed or injured in the violence as per the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
