JAIPUR: The suspended police official of Orissa cadre, B.B. Mohanty, on Thursday surrendered before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jaipur II) Rajendra Bansal here. He was sent to judicial custody after the court rejected his bail plea on a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued to him on the charge of abetting his son to jump parole. Mr. Mohanty will remain in judicial custody till January 23. Mr. Mohanty’s son, Bitihotra, was convicted by a fast track court and sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for raping a German tourist in Alwar in March 2006. Bitti was granted 15 days parole from the Central Jail here on November 20, 2006 to visit his hometown in Orissa to meet his ailing mother. His father, then a senior police officer in Orissa, had stood surety. However, Bitti did not return to the jail on the expiry of the parole period — December 4, 2006. Following this, the court of ACJM II issued a non-bailable warrant to Mr. Mohanty and charged him with helping, hiding and harbouring his son. The father had approached the Orissa High Court to get a stay on the execution of NBW, which the Rajasthan police got removed from the Supreme Court. The apex court had asked him to surrender.
