MELBOURNE: Andy Roddick removed uncertainty about the new Australian Open court surface by using his trademark big serve to overwhelm Marat Safin 6-3, 6-3 at the tune-up Kooyong Classic event on Thursday. Thursday’s play was the first test of the Plexicushion surface — being used at Kooyong and in the Australian Open beginning Monday — in hot conditions, with temperatures topping 40 Celsius.
