Development works in Karur get a boost

Rs.51.13 lakh sanctioned for better amenities


Private contributions to Namakku Naame scheme extremely good

Karur likely to get the second instalment of State’s contribution


KARUR: A sum of Rs.51.13 lakh has been sanctioned under the Infrastructure Gap Filling Fund for Karur district for improving basic amenities including drinking water supply augmentation works and laying cement concrete roads in village panchayats.

Detailing the rural development works under way in the district here on Friday, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that through the State Finance Commission Fund, Rs.1.02 crore was being released to the Panchayati Raj institutions such as the district panchayat, panchayat unions and the village panchayats for meeting essential expenses like administrative expenses, capital and maintenance works and other essential works.

Under the Drought Relief for 2007-08, Rs.1.50 crore has been received and works allotted, Mr. Venkatesh said. Under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, a total of 1,246 works at an estimated cost of Rs.6.35 crore had been sanctioned of which 1,019 works have been completed.

The Collector has directed the officials to expedite the remaining works for completion by February 15.

Under the Namakku Naame scheme, works estimated to cost Rs.84.83 lakh would be taken up in the district in the current phase.

While individuals and institutions in Karur district had done extremely well in contributing Rs.28.10 lakh to the scheme, Mr. Venkatesh said that the State Government has released its contribution of Rs.56.32 lakh.

As of now, a sum of Rs. 32 lakh has been received from the public so far and shortly the State Government would release its fund, he added.

Administrative sanction has been given for taking up 32 works at a cost of Rs.46.35 lakh, he said.

The district was expecting the second installment of the State’s contribution as the government has promised districts doing well of another installment based on public enthusiasm.

The Assistant Director (Panchayats) Sridharan, and PA to Collector (Panchayat Development) Padmanabhan were present on the occasion.
