Farmers will learn modern techniques Model farms will be established THENI: Upper Vaigai river and Varattar-Nagalar river basins would be developed under Integrated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Bodies Restoration and Management Project to increase farm productivity and to create multiple livelihood opportunities to thousands of farmers. All departments would work in tandem for the purpose, said Collector Har Sahay Meena. Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, he said revamping of irrigation infrastructure, restoration of surface and groundwater potential and propagation of modern agriculture practices to increase crop productivity were the major objectives of the three-year project. Agriculture officials would offer hybrid crops and impart advanced techniques to farmers to boost crop yield. The Department of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry would take care of creating multiple livelihood opportunities through crop-livestock integrated farming system. Agriculture marketing officials would provide technologies for value addition and post-harvesting and assist in marketing crops. Horticulture officials would take care of soil reclamation, staggered planting techniques, mulching, micro-irrigation and identification of suitable crops and varieties. Agricultural universities would be involved in transfer of technology and training farmers, who would be roped in at planning levels. According to K. Periasamy, Joint Director of Agriculture, the Varattar-Nagalar basin in Andipatti and Periyakulam areas would be developed at a cost of Rs.12.20 lakh and Upper Vaigai basin in Kadamalaigundu area at Rs.17.87 lakh. Proposals had been sent for approval. System of Rice Intensification programme would be introduced in these areas. Three hundred demonstration parks each for hybrid maize and pulses would be developed on Varattar basin. Eighty-four training camps and 16 field visits would be arranged. Infrastructure would be created at a cost of Rs.9 lakh. Vaigai basinThe same crops would be introduced in Vaigai basin also. Besides, 39 model farms for paddy, 120 for maize and 180 for pulses would be developed. Over 6 lakh ha in 63 sub-basins in the State would be developed under the project.
