Raipur: A sarpanch was killed by a group of villagers near here on Friday following a scuffle, police said. The burnt body of Bhola, Niwari village sarpanch, was recovered by Suhela police and a few villagers have been detained in connection with the incident, Raipur District Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar said. “Reports coming from the area indicated that the sarpanch was burnt to death by villagers, but only a forensic test will reveal whether he was burnt alive or assaulted to death and then burnt,” he said. According to the police, the sarpanch tried to create a ruckus in an inebriated condition during a village fair on Thursday and villagers forced him to leave the area. An enraged sarpanch attacked the villagers on Friday morning with a weapon, and they retaliated, the police official said, adding the villagers also ransacked his house. Director General of Police Vishwaranjan said additional forces, led by the SP, have rushed to the spot to maintain peace in the area. “Only after a detailed examination the cause of death will be known,” he said. -- PTI
