Rail roko at 600 places
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: Many Kannada organisations and the Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samiti will stage a “rail roko” at 600 places throughout the State between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on January 27 demanding completion of promised railway projects and preference to Kannadigas on a par with other States in railway recruitment.
They will hold a protest programme at the Bangalore Airport on January 16 to draw the Union Government’s attention to the problems of the State.
Samithi president and MLA Vatal Nagaraj told presspersons here on Friday that the Union Government had been ignoring the requirements of the State in the railway sector. It had stopped running the popular “Chikka Railu” which was running between Bangalore and Kolar covering major taluks, for gauge conversion purposes. But it could not take its conversion project beyond Kolar even after 25 years.
On the other hand, the ambitious Chamarajanagar-Mettupalyam railway line project was yet to start, he said. He said the Union Government had not bothered to develop and strengthen the railway links of the State on a par with other States in the country although six eminent persons from the State had held the portfolio at various junctures.
