Tamil Nadu
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever" goes the well-known saying. When beauty is understood and appreciated in its physical sense,it gives one the feeling of hitherto unenjoyed bliss. Tamilnadu with its host of towering temples and an array of historical places is also a popular destination for silk-saris. In this context the saris produced and sold by Thico Silks - The Thirubuvanam Silk Handloom Weavers Cooperative Production and Sale Society Limited,Thirubuvanam need special mention. Started with a twin purpose of preserving the art of silk-weaving and uplifting the life of the artistically rich but economically poor weavers of this region, this glorious society marches ahead with more poise and confidence. Interestingly, this society was started with just an investment of ten thousand rupees way back in 1955, now doing business to the tune of 30 crores a yearBesides the most attractive and well-maintained head office at Thirubuvanam, a picturesque place situated just 6 kilometres away from Kumbakonam on Mayiladuthurai route, it has 39 other branches spread across the entire Tamilnadu. Recipient of Indian Government’s award for the best Silk Cooperative Weaver Society in 1977, it had already won national acclaim for its design called "Vanasingaram The Thirubuvanam variety of Silk-sari has its own unique features. First of all, it is very smooth and it spreads over the body of the wearer elegantly. This uniqueness is due to the two-ply warp weaving style. On the other hand Kancheepuram variety of saris may feel little rough and look stiff because they are woven with three-ply warp. Moreover the pallu of a Thirubuvanam silk-sari is woven continuosly on the loom and the pallu simply runs on from the body of the sari, whereas in Kanchipuram variety the pallu is added to the body separately so that sometime one can see the difference in texture between the body of the sari and the pallu. In this type the threads are not uniform in strength. Thus the THICO Society’s silk sari is a rare combination of smoothness and strength. Notably this is the only society with ISO mark and it speaks volumes about its reliability and value. More than 50 new designs in breathtaking colour combinations are introduced every month. To cater to the needs of modern women, for this pongal season, multi-coloured and contrast-coloured silk saris are introduced with price below 3500 rupees. These products are suitably named as "College Collection". Similarly to wear on grand occasions like marriage, house-warming and betrothel 50 new designs are introduced with price ranging from 5000 to 7000 rupees. On the higher end 10 new diesigns are available from 10000 rupees to 20000 rupees and 3 new designs below 30000 rupees. Under the able administration and guidance of Mr.S.Prakasam,Joint Director of Handlooms & Textiles/Special Officer, this Society prospers in every way and continues to earn the esteem of lakhs of people from all over the world.
