Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy on Friday said that he did not believe in any formalities in meeting senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran and that he would participate in the February 1 rally that the latter was organising in Kochi. At a press conference here, Mr. Chandy said that Mr. Karunakaran called him and invited him to attend the rally. He said Mr. Karunakaran was now a part of the Congress. The party would give him due respect in accordance to his seniority and age. He fully agreed to Mr. Karunakaran’s statement that only the Congress could lead the country to progress on a secular democratic platform. Mr. Chandy parried a number of questions related to factionalism and its revival with the arrival of Mr. Karunakaran in the party. After repeat questions on the issue, he admitted that he did not display any excitement at the development as he felt that there was no need for any formalities. The attempts of NCP leader K Muraleedharan to create a division in the Congress would not work. The party would function unitedly.
