Field day: M. Chockalingam, Judge, Madras High Court, declaring open sports meet for lawyers on Wednesday. From left: Judges K.N. Basha and A. Kulasekaran are seen.

MADURAI: “On your marks, ready, get set, go…” the Judge said and the lawyers dashed on the track with an explosive start.

Some panted, few tripped and others completed the sprint with ease. And if you are bemused by what was happening with the judges and lawyers, be not, for it was the annual sports meet of the Madurai Bench High Court Advocates’ Association.

M. Chockalingam, Judge, Madras High Court, declared open the meet by flagging off the 100-metre sprint on the court premises on Wednesday.

He was accompanied by his colleagues, A. Kulasekaran, K.N. Basha, S. Nagamuthu and S. Palanivelu. The Judges were pleased to witness the lawyers, who contend vociferously in court halls, compete with equal vigour in the track and field events.

A tug-of-war between bachelor and married lawyers was the highlight of the meet which comprised shot put, discuss throw, javelin throw and long jump, besides 100 and 200 metre dash.

Separate events were organised for women, and lawyers aged above 60 years participated in a 400-metre walk.

The winners were honoured at a colourful ‘Pongal’ celebration organised by the association on Thursday.

‘Thappattam’ etc.,

MBHAA president M. Ajmal Khan said that the members had taken pain to ensure that the celebrations were held in the true spirit of the harvest festival.

They had hired a troupe to perform ‘thappattam’ and such other folk arts. The lawyers too participated in a poetry recital competition.

A fancy dress competition was organised for lawyers’ children.
