NAGAPATTINAM: A major fire broke out at the crude oil jetty (huge tank) of the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) at Panangudi near here on Friday evening and the fire was being put out till night.

Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Nagapattinam Collector, told The Hindu that the fire broke out around 4.30 p.m. and no casualty was reported and the fire did not spread to nearby diesel and other huge tanks.

He said that V. Marimuthu, MLA of Nagapattinam has rushed to the spot.

J. Abdul Jaffer, Divisional Fire Officer, Nagapattinam, who is supervising the fire fighting operations, told The Hindu that fire tenders from Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Tiruvarur, Kilvelur, Tarangampadi and Nannilam and also from Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry, have rushed to the spot and extinguishing the fire.

He said that oil fire could only be controlled and could not be put out immediately as the entire thing will burn till the tank became empty. The cause of the fire is not known and the total loss cannot also be estimated now, he said.

A senior official of the CPCL told The Hindu that the crude oil jetty caught fire while cleaning the tank.

He pointed out that there was only a little quantity of oil in the tank at the time of the fire accident.

However, top officials of the CPCL are tight-lipped about the quantity of crude in the jetty as it has the capacity to store several lakh of litres.
