KANCHEEPURAM: Automobile workshop owners in and around Kancheepuram have been advised to form a cooperative society in order to get it registered as an entity authorised by the Motor Vehicle Maintenance Department to carry out minor repairs to government vehicles.

Enquiries reveal that the MVM Department, Chennai, issues licences to one or two private workshops in the district or taluk headquarters to help government drivers carry out small repairs to the vehicles, which cost less than Rs.500 a month. But major repair works, which would cost more, should be carried out through MVM depots or could be carried out at the authorised workshops after getting a ‘no-objection’ certificate from the Department, Chennai.

However, with the arrival of latest vehicles that replaced the old model vehicles, the government drivers were made to depend on private workshops to get defects, if any, set right quickly and effectively, sources said.

Therefore, the district-level senior officials, who have played a key role in the formation of an “Auto Nagar” on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway in Kilambi panchayat, have advised the Kancheepuram Motor Vehicle Repair Workshop Owners Welfare Association to form a cooperative society and apply for a licence from the Department, said an office-bearer of the association. The main objective of the “Auto Nagar” was to shift the automobile-related workshop activities on main roads and interior lanes, out of the town so that more space on the carriageways could be made available for a smooth flow of traffic.

Hailing the suggestion as pro-active and constructive, an office-bearer of the association said if this arrangement materialised, then it would help in an equitable distribution of government vehicle repair works among the members and thereby, help provide a regular income for them. Apart from pursuing this suggestion, the association has also planned to form the Towing Service Wing in order to bring ‘broke down’ vehicles to the “Auto Nagar” on the National Highway from the town and other places. It has also planned to introduce an “onroad service” facility to attend minor defects, he said.

The 12.50 acres of land, allotted by the district administration for formation of the “Auto Nagar,” had been sub-divided in such a manner as to accommodate all 252 members and the blueprint had been approved by the Kilambi village panchayat.

The “Auto Nagar” was expected to become operational in April this year, he added.
