Former IPS officer Bidya Bhusan Mohanty JAIPUR: B. B. Mohanty, the suspended police officer of Orissa cadre who surrendered before a magistrate here on Thursday, was released on bail on Friday. Additional District Judge (Court No. 9) Chandrika Prasad Sharma granted him bail on two sureties of Rs.1 lakh each and a personal bond of Rs.2 lakh. Mr. Mohanty, whose bail plea was rejected the previous day by the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jaipur II), had moved his fresh bail plea later the same day through his counsel Mahesh Gupta before the District Court. The bail petition was transferred to the court of the Additional District Judge on Friday morning. Mr. Mohanty, wanted by the police for allegedly abetting his son Bitihotra in jumping parole in December 2006, had surrendered after a Supreme Court order rejecting his plea for squashing a non-bailable warrant issued against him by the Rajasthan police. The apex court had asked him to surrender before the Jaipur court. On his surrender, the ACJM (Jaipur II) court rejected his bail plea to send him to judicial custody till January 23. The senior Mohanty, a former Director-General of Police (Home Guard) of Orissa, had stood surety for his son Bitihotra in November 2006 for the latter’s release on parole to visit his ailing mother in Orissa. Bitihotra, convicted by a fast track court for raping a German tourist in Alwar town of Rajasthan in March 2006 and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment, never returned.
