Forum for eight-hour shift

Staff Reporter

“Expedite disbursement of leave salary, retirement benefits”

MADURAI: The Government Transport Workers’ Association, Madurai, has demanded fixed work timings of eight-hour shifts. It must be ensured that supplementary work given to workers was not unilaterally extended to 10 or 11 hours, the association said.

Resolutions to the effect were passed at its 35th annual general council meeting here recently.

The association also demanded speedy . Owing to superannuation and voluntary retirement, the workforce in maintenance section had declined adversely, it pointed out and called for appointment of personnel in maintenance section at the rate of 1.25 persons per vehicle.

For every 100 buses, eight spare buses must be kept on reserve.

The association said that the spare buses were being run on special duty and efforts were under way to convert special routes into regular ones. This could cause problems in times of emergency such as breakdown of buses.

The meeting also called expediting the construction of Ellis Nagar bridge, as at present buses had to take a detour through a stretch of National Highway, resulting in more accidents.

Facilities at workshops

It called for the provision of proper facilities at workshops in Madurai as many of them did not have retiring rooms or toilets. The fixing of mileage per litre varied from depot to depot, the association said, adding that it also varied from one office to another.

It also called for doing away with contract and casual forms of employment and demanded that those who had worked for 240 days must be regularised.
