Pongal to be made New Year day

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday said that an official announcement making the first of the Tamil month, Thai, (Pongal), the Tamil New Year day would be made in the near future.

A group of 500 scholars had arrived at the conclusion that the Tamil New Year day was on that day, he said.

Speaking after inaugurating Chennai Sangamam, the week-long cultural extravaganza that brings 1,400 artists from across the State to showcase their talent in the city, he said it would be an annual event during Pongal.

Tourism Minister Suresh Rajan was confident that the event would receive a huge response as it did last year.

Jegath Gasper, founder, Tamil Maiyam, said that when launched last year, Chennai Sangamam turned out to be more than a mere folk festival.

The extravaganza went on to initiate a quiet but far reaching cultural dialogue and social dialogue. Mr. Karunanidhi witnessed a one-and-a-half hour folk and fusion show ahead of the inauguration.

Kanimozhi, coordinator, Chennai Sangamam, said the same show would be staged at the Open Air Auditorium of the Indian Institute of Technology on January 11. Simultaneously, events would be staged across parks and public places in Chennai till January 17.
