HDR bunker opened
Special Correspondent
VISAKHAPATNAM: A Rs.10 lakh high dose radiation (HDR) bunker to provide radiation therapy to cancer patients was inaugurated at Lions Cancer Hospital (LCH) in the city on Thursday.
With this bunker, the hospital could now give treatment using telecobalt and HDR units separately whereas hitherto the units had been working with interlocking system in the same existing bunker.
Lions International Director K.G. Ramakrishna Murthy, who inaugurated the bunker, said the Lions Club International Foundation had provided financial assistance to this unique HDR project which is available only in LCH in the city. Seven to eight patients could be given radiation treatment per day in HDR equipment whereas in the low dose radiation unit only two or three patients could get therapy. Lions district 324-C-1 governor and hospital Chairman Grandhi Venkateswara Rao said there were plans to set up a separate chemotherapy ward and build a shelter for poor patients.
