Enquiries reveal that those receiving free power and who got the free colour TV sets alone were targeted TAMBARAM: A group of unidentified men has been severing cables at the huts of poor families, which have got free power supply under a government scheme at Kasbapuram near Tambaram. Kasbapuram is part of Agaramthen panchayat about 6 km from here. There are number of poor families whose huts have just a single 40-watt bulb under the Hut Service Connection scheme launched over 25 years ago . Under the scheme, poor families living in thatched huts were entitled to free power and they could install a 40-watt bulb. Though new connections were not provided, original allottees continued to receive the benefits. There are a considerable number of poor families who have been provided free power supply under the Hut Service Connection scheme in Kasbapuram. Some of them have also received the State government’s free colour television sets, which were distributed a month ago. Two weeks ago, more than a dozen families living in huts were taken by surprise when a group of men began to sever the power cables from the EB post to their huts. Enquiries revealed that those receiving free power and who recently received the colour TV sets alone were targeted, while others with metres installed in their houses were spared. Residents of second and third streets of Krishna Nagar in Kasbapuram told reporters that they were not aware of the reason why power supply was cut. They did not have an idea of the identity of the men who climbed up their huts and chopped off the power cables. Residents said they preferred not to lodge a police complaint as they did not want to confront the miscreants any further. Stating that school students were unable to study in the evening hours, the residents said they would rather use kerosene lamps for lighting and firewood for cooking. Officials from both the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Agaramthen panchayat confirmed they had not initiated any move to disconnect power supply. There were only authorised ‘Hut Service Connections’ in Kasbapuram and there were no complaints of irregularities against them, TNEB engineers said categorically, adding that they would probe to find the group of men on the prowl harassing the poor families.
