Distance education wing fills Madurai Kamaraj University coffers

Total corpus fund in bank set to cross Rs. 225 crore

MADURAI: Admission momentum in the distance education wing of Madurai Kamaraj University continues to be strong with the varsity earning Rs.52 crore during 2007 through the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE).

The DDE will transfer Rs. 50 crore to the university account so as to add to the already strong corpus accumulated over the years to meet the pension payout for university employees.

I. Singaram, Registrar, said on Wednesday that distance education had become an important source of revenue for the university over the years, thanks to the swelling enrolment figures for various courses.

According to him, the once the DDE transfers the amount.

“Already there is a corpus of Rs.180 crore and the accrued interest from banks is also being added to the existing amount,” Dr. Singaram said.

“Retired staff of our university are getting their monthly pension without any hassles following a focused approach to strengthen the corpus,” he pointed out.

Giving the student enrolment particulars, S. Vadivelu, Director of Distance Education, said that the 2007 calendar year enrolment was close to 50,000 and the large number of admissions was able to clock good revenue for the distance education wing.

For the six-month period from July to December last year, nearly 35,500 admissions were recorded and more than 1.2 lakh students are on rolls right now. Dr. Vadivelu also said that the Directorate was considering various proposals to be carried out for students’ convenience.
