Anklesaria-Gupta pair triumphs

R. Jayaram

Bharuch: Keyzad Anklesaria from Ahmedabad and Uttam Gupta from Bangalore, who have rarely played together as partners, combined beautifully to win the Open Pairs event for the Holkar Trophy on the concluding day of the Bridge Nationals at the GNFC Sports Complex here.

The established pair from Indian Railways, Amar Nath Banerjee-Sumit Mukherjee had taken a ‘flier’ of a start early on in the 31-round 62-board final with their score reading as much as 95% at one point. They slipped a bit around the one third stage and Anklesaria-Gupta hit the front. Then on, it was a one-horse race. At the end, Banerjee-Mukherjee finished second, ten points behind the winners.

The top five: Keyzad Anklesaria & Uttam Gupta, Amar Nath Banerjee & Sumit Mukherjee, Kiran Nadar & B. Satyanarayana, Sunit Choksi & Rajesh Dalal, and Dipak Poddar & K. Krishnakumar
