Saha, Mouma start favourites

NEW DELHI: In the absence of National champion A. Sharath Kamal, Subhajit Saha is the leading contender in the men’s section of the North Zone major ranking table tennis tournament that opens at the AIIMS Student Gymkhana here on Saturday.

Among the ladies, National champion Mouma Das tops the list, followed by the inter-institutional champion Neha Aggarwal.

Unlike the ladies section which offers a full field, the absence of Sharath has taken some sheen away from the men’s singles. Sharath is currently busy playing in the Spanish League for his club San Sebastian.

According to chief referee A.S. Kler, R. Abhishek (youth boys), Neha Aggarwal (youth girls), V. Nitin (junior boys), Pooja Sahastrabudhe (junior girls), Avik Das (sub-junior boys) and Mallika Bhandarkar (sub-junior girls) are the leading names in the other sections.

The event, which offers Rs. 3.30 lakh as prize-money, was to be held at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium. However, the last-minute cancellation of the booking forced the host Haryana Table Tennis Association to shift the event to the AIIMS Student Gymkhana.

The main draw will open on Sunday after a day of qualifying rounds.
