Farmers of Kalady and Avanamkodu on a warpath

KOCHI: The State government has approved the Rs.12.5-crore special tsunami rehabilitation package for Edavanakkad, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said on Friday.

Talking to reporters here, he said that of the total package Rs.1 crore has been allocated for irrigation, Rs.457.25 lakh for housing, Rs.152 lakh for Public Works Department (PWD) bridges, Rs.92.05 lakh for PWD buildings, Rs.378.25 lakh and Rs.70 lakh for electrification works.

Although the Kerala Water Authority had submitted projects worth Rs.50 lakh, the State government apportioned it between housing (Rs.10 lakh), PWD buildings (Rs.25 lakh) and PWD roads (Rs.15 lakh).

The district level monitoring committee comprising elected representatives of the area had submitted the package to the government for approval.

Farmers’ woes

A meeting attended by Jose Thettayil, MLA, and Irrigation Executive Engineer held at the district collectorate discussed the problems faced by the farmers of Kalady and Avanamkodu regions owing to scarcity of water from the failure of a motor of the Avanamkodu lift irrigation project. The farmers in the region are on a warpath over the issue.

It was decided that the steps would be taken to rectify the problems of the irrigation project using the MLA fund within the next seven days.

Rehabilitation

The filling of 4.5 acres of land at Vaduthala identified for rehabilitation of those displaced as a result of land acquisition for providing rail connectivity to the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal would begin on Saturday, the Collector said. He said that land filling would be completed within a week.

Those displaced from Cheranalloor and Mulavukad villages would be rehabilitated on the land at Vaduthala, while the three acres identified in Kakkanad would be for the displaced from Edappally north and south villages.
