Continuing education festival from today

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More than 1,000 contestants, including literacy volunteers and students, are expected to vie for top honours at the first State-level Continuing Education Arts Festival beginning here on Saturday.

District panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan, who chairs the organising committee, and N. Jayadevan, Director of the State Literacy Mission, said at a press conference here on Friday that the two-day event would be held at three venues on the premises of Tagore Theatre and the Cotton Hill school.

O.N.V. Kurup, poet, will inaugurate the festival. Education Minister M.A. Baby will preside.

The inaugural function will be preceded by a colourful procession from Asan Square to the theatre. Agriculture Minister Mullakara Ratnakaran will present the prize for the best float. G. Karthikeyan, MLA, will deliver the keynote address.

Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty will distribute prizes to the winners at the valedictory function on Sunday evening. Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, will preside.

Mr. Jayadevan said the competitions would be held separately for literacy volunteers and students. The winners of the district-level competitions could participate in the State festival.

Mr. Nagappan said the past one year had witnessed a spurt in literacy and continuing education programmes after a brief lull.

“We have drawn up plans to expand the activities of the mission,” he said.

Mr. Jayadevan said the equivalency courses had elicited a good response.

Vocational training would be made a part of the curriculum of the continuing education programme.
