Kannada activists want Governor to act

Demonstration held in front of Raj Bhavan

Implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report sought

BANGALORE: Seven pro-Kannada organisations, under the leadership of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat and the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, on Friday held a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan in support of their various demands, which included Kannada implementation and jobs for Kannadigas.

The protesters wanted Governor Rameshwar Thakur to take immediate steps to implement the recommendations of the Sarojini Mahishi committee on jobs.

Addressing the demonstrators, Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Chandrashekar Patil said the Mahishi report had clearly said that in Karnataka Kannadigas should be given preference in jobs.

He pointed out that in the recent recruitment drive by the Railways, people from Bihar have been given preference over Kannadigas.

The State had been getting short shrift on many other issues, including river-water sharing and conferring the classical language tag on Kannada. The protesters were also addressed by vedike president Narayana Gowda and others. They later presented a memorandum to the Governor.
