New read: Prince Muffakam Jah releasing the book ‘Locating Home-India’s Hyderabadis Abroad’ along with the author Karen Isaksen Leonard on Friday.
HYDERABAD: A book tracing Hyderabadi emigrants since 1947 settled in five continents titled - ‘Locating Home-India’s Hyderabadis Abroad’ - authored by Karen Isaksen Leonard, noted anthropologist from University of California, was released by Prince Muffakam Jah on Friday.
Vinod K. Jairath, Professor of Sociology in Osmania University, said several previously unknown facets of Hyderabadis, who had migrated to Pakistan, have been retraced by the author.
“The middle and lower class of Hyderabad who had migrated to Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Rawalpindi saw Pakistan as an opportunity and made it big. However, it was the aristocratic, elite Hyderabadis who were still ‘Gair Mulki’ (outsiders). They in turn left for UK and other European countries. These interesting aspects have been brought out in this book,” he said. The book also emphasises how memories of old Hyderabad have been retained by the first generation migrants and discarded by second and third generations.
