Open space near quarters made dumping ground for garbage Despite several appeals, no steps taken to improve the conditions HYDERABAD: Overflowing drains, absence of streetlights and no drinking water facility – these are common problems in upcoming colonies or slums. But it is surprising that the quarters housing professors and teachers of Osmania University have been facing similar problems for decades. Demanding repairs to the dilapidated buildings and supply of drinking water, several teachers under the aegis of Osmania University Teachers Association (OUTA) staged a dharna at the Vice Chancellor’s office on Friday. OUTA general secretary B. Satyanarayana alleged that despite several notices and complaints with regard to repairs and laying of drinking water pipelines, the administration had not taken any initiative and was forcing the teachers to take to the streets. He said there were no streetlights anywhere in the quarters and the internal roads were laid decades ago. The open space alongside the university quarters located opposite to IICT is made a dumping ground for garbage. He said nearly 300 teachers of the university were staying in the quarters paying on an average about Rs. 3,000 per month towards rent apart from other maintenance charges. The university realised about Rs. One crore per annum from the teachers but authorities were least bothered about improving the conditions. The teachers later submitted a memorandum to Registrar M. Mutha Reddy.
