KOTTAYAM: Arun Alexander sunk in 20 points as St. Thomas HSS, Kozhencherry, pipped host St Ephreme’s ‘B’ team 43-40 in the fifth St. Ephreme’s Trophy all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament which began here on Friday. The tournament was inaugurated by Joseph Kurian, the President of the Athirampuzha Panchayat. The scores: St. Thomas HSS, Kozhencherry 43 (Arun Alexander 20) bt St. Ephreme’s ‘B’ 40 (Tony K.Mathew 12). St. Anne’s HSS, Kurianad 23 (Jaison Baby 12) bt KE HSS, Mananam 17. Unnikrishnan, Jiju hit centuriesG.P. Unnikrishnan and Jiju Janardhanan hit centuries while M.P. Manu and Mazhar came up with four-wicket hauls as Muthoot-Ernakulam CC ‘A’ crushed Globstar Telecom, Aluva, by 195 runs in the SRK Group-Ernakulam District ‘A’ division cricket league at the Tripunithura Palace Oval, Kochi, on Friday. The scores: Muthoot-ECC ‘A’ 370 for six in 45 overs (G.P. Unnikrishnan 134, Jiju Janardhanan 121, Sinu Raj 63, Sanal Kumar three for 71) bt Globstar Telecom, Aluva 175 in 30.4 overs (U.Achuthan 71, V.S. Shiju 35, M.P.Manu four for 31, Mazhar four for 67). Not recognisedChess Association-Kerala (CAK), in a statement in Kozhikode on Friday, said that the State Government and the Sports Council have not recognised the achievements of Kerala’s first Grandmaster G.N. Gopal, who won the gold medal on the fourth board at the recent Asian team championship in Visakhapatanam. CAK said Gopal required the services of a foreign coach but it involved huge expenses. CAK further said that Gopal’s exploits has inspired many a new young talent in Kerala. “It is good to know that CAK has come out in support of me now,”” said Gopal. It may be recalled that the CAK, not so long ago, had threatened to take action against Gopal for his remarks against a few CAK officials.
