Vinod shines in SAI B’s thumping win

Chennai: Striker Vinod Rayar was the toast of Sports Authority of India ‘B’ when he played a stellar role in the 6-1 victory over YMCA in the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Friday.

Vinod scored three of the six goals in the match. SAI led 2-0 at half-time

Vinod gave SAI a flying start with an early goal in the 6th minute, and Allen Rajah enlarged the lead midway through. YMCA narrowed down the lead when Pradeep found the net. Till that point YMCA was very much in the match.

But the second half proved otherwise. SAI wrested the initiative, thanks largely to the two successive goals by Vinod Rayar followed by Satya Rajan.

In the closing minutes, Dayanand scored off a penalty corner to complete the tally.

Earlier, Food Corporation of India scored a solitary goal victory over Madras Blues, the match-winner surfacing from Venkatesan.

Sharmila-Anjana win

A. Sharmila and Anjana Sundaram pair won the girls’ doubles title with a 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Priya Selvakumar and Prithika Rani in the BSNL-KTC State-ranking junior tennis tournament at Krishnan Tennis Centre, Kottivakkam here on Friday.

P. Vignesh Prabu and Md. Abrar claimed the boys’ doubles title.

Other results: Boys: (doubles final): P. Vignesh Prabu & Md. Abrar bt Rithwik Anand & V. Vishal 1-6, 7-5, 6-0; (singles semifinals): H.M. Yunus bt Ashwin Srivathsaav 6-1, 6-2; Rithvik Anand bt S. Vishwesh 6-1, 6-1.

Girls: (singles semifinals): A. Sharmila bt H. Madhumitha 6-0, 6-1; Kavya Bharath bt A. Ankitha 6-0, 6-1.

St. Joseph’s dominates

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology, Chennai, won both the men and women championships in the Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College national inter-collegiate sports fest held at Bangalore between January 6 and 9. More than 1200 competitors drawn from all over the country took part in the festival.

The men’s team collected 47 points and Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain 31. Hemmanth of St. Joseph’s was declared the best athlete.

In the women’s section, St. Joseph’s tallied 66 points followed by Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain (38). St. Joseph’s came second in the table tennis competition.

Dheeraj scalps five

K.M. Dheeraj (five for 10) helped St. Patrick’s script a 24-run win over Sri Sankara Vidyalaya in a TNCA-Boost city schools under-17 cricket tournament match here recently.

The scores:

DAV Boys SSS 141 for five in 30 overs (A. Srinivasan 55, Santhosh 29) bt Vidya Mandir ‘B’ 94 in 27.1 overs.

St. Patrick’s AIHSS 112 in 25.3 overs (K.M. Dheeraj 37, Sasidev 25, M. Aswin three for 25) bt Sri Sankara Vidyalaya (Pammal) 88 in 27.5 overs (K.M. Dheeraj five for 10).

Good spell by Sathish

Sathish’s five for 21 enabled Don Bosco MHSS defeat Vidya Mandir by five wickets in the GOMS under-15 cricket tournament held here on Friday.

The scores:

Vidya Mandir 110 for eight in 30 overs (M.A.M. Ganesh 35, Akshay Srinivasan 30, Sathish five for 21) lost to Don Bosco 112 for five in 28.3 overs (Nithin Dharan 29, Aswath 51).

Chettinad Vidyashram 145 for nine in 30 overs (Abhishek Mehra 61) bt PSBB (K.K. Nagar) 138 in 28.5 overs (Keshav Anand 35, Mohan Babu three for 27).

Varsity cricket

University of Madras will conduct the South India and the all-India inter-university inter-zone cricket tournaments (2007-08). The South Zone event will be held from January 23 to 31 and the all-India event will be from Feb. 1 to 7.

The Tamil Nadu boys’ team won the junior National tennikoit championship held recently at Junagadh in Ahmedabad.

The team comprised of S. Silambarasan, N. Arunkarthik, S. Tamilvanan, E. Arivachakhan, S. Rajesh and K. Rubirajan. The girls’ team (A.V. Shaimeem Fathima, V. Divya, I. Merlin Joseph, S. Saranya and R. Nithya) finished fourth.

In the individual events, S. Silambarasan placed third in boys’ singles while the mixed doubles pair of K Rubirajan and R. Nithya took the third place.

Hockey trials

The Chennai Hockey Association will conduct selection trials for picking the under 18 team for the State inter-District championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium at 7 a.m. on January 13. Players born on or after 1-1-1990 will be eligible for selection. Contact 94441-11884 or 94442-71202.
