Jyoti Basu “not in the race”

KOLKATA: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu on Saturday said he was not in the race for receiving Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award.

“I am not in the race,” Mr. Basu was quoted as saying in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) daily Ganashakti.

“Nothing wrong”

West Bengal CPI (M) secretary Biman Bose said the party did not hanker after official honours. It had not suggested to the Centre that Bharat Ratna be given to Mr. Basu. “When the name of Atal Bihari Vajpayee came up for Bharat Ratna, there is nothing wrong in naming Jyoti Basu. He is also a great leader of the country,” senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily said on Friday. — PTI
