Milk producers urge Govt. to hike procurement price

Staff Reporter

Milk production to be stopped on January 30

Price of milk in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts is one of the lowest in the State

Government should sort out the variation in the price of milk in different districts

Krishnagiri: The Dharmapuri District Milk Producers Welfare Association has urged the State Government to increase the procurement price of milk.

At the milk producers’ conference here on Friday, State president of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam S. A. Chinnasamy said that the price of milk in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts was one of the lowest in the State.

Demanding hike in the procurement price of milk, the association would stop milk production in the districts on January 30, he said.

The societies were disbursing 88 paise less a litre in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts when compared with societies in Salem and Vellore districts.

The Government should sort out the variation in the price of milk in different districts. Though Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts produced 6 lakh litres of milk a day Aavin procured only 1.20 lakh litres.

Closure

As a result, private companies procured more than 75 per cent of the milk. If the same trend continued the cooperative milk societies in the districts would face closure.

So, the Government should procure milk at Rs. 15 a litre, Mr. Chinnasamy added.

The producers claimed that the price of cattle feed had increased by 50 per cent over the past few years.

The Government should immediately disburse the pay arrears to producers for 2003-04.

Rejected

On an average, over 1,000 litres of milk was rejected as sub-standard milk by Aavin resulting in loss to the milk producers. The price of the milk was also fixed at a low price of Rs.1.80 a litre.

Milk producers from Palacode were forced to travel a distance of 80 km to sell their milk in Krishnagiri.

Steps should be initiated to sell their produce in the Dharmapuri milk producers union, which was 30 km away.
