Sanction funds to renovate sugar mills, say farmers

Special Correspondent

Conduct trial run before issuing cane cutting orders

PERAMBALUR: The Perambalur district unit of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam has urged the State Government to sanction funds to renovate the Perambalur Sugar Mills.

A resolution adopted at the district executive committee meeting of the association held here on Friday stated that the Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation of Tamil Nadu had already recommended the renovation of the sugar mill. It also urged the Government to ensure that a trial run of the plant was carried out before issuing cane cutting orders.

Alleging that the mill was not running properly after maintenance work this season, the association demanded that the Government conduct an enquiry into this. The association would resort to an agitation if the mill was closed due to machinery problems.

Waiver of crop loans

Through other resolutions, the association demanded the waiver of all crop loans given by nationalised banks, adequate compensation to farmers in rain-fed areas where crops were damaged due to absence of rain, fixation of a minimum support price of Rs.900 a quintal for maize and Rs.3,000 a quintal for cotton and steps to refund all matured fixed deposits made by investors in the Nakka Salem Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank.

The meeting resolved to stage a demonstration in front of the Collector’s office here on February 6 to press these demands. The State Secretary of the association, R.Raja Chidambaram, presided over the meeting.
