TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has planned to plant saplings worth Rs.10 crore under the scheme for encouraging farmers to cultivate forest crops on their patta lands throughout the State, according to N. Selvaraj, Minister for Forests.

Under the scheme, 90,000 saplings have been planted so far on 326 acres, benefiting 190 people. The government has allotted Rs.480.80 crore for the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Programme, which includes social development and welfare schemes such as provision of loans for dairying and sheep-rearing and construction of check dams. A total of 75 villages in Tiruvannamalai district have so far benefited by the programme, while another 420 in the district have been selected under the programme this year.

Food Minister E.V. Velu sought a road in the forest area via Chengam, Paramanandhal and Melpattu to reduce the travel distance between Chengam and Jamunamarudhur.

He also wanted solar fences in the forest areas to protect crops from wild animals. Tirupattur MP T. Venugopal, Tiruvannamalai MLA K. Pitchandi, Arni MLA R. Sivanandam and Chief Conservator of Forests R. Gunasekaran spoke.

Earlier, Mr. Selvaraj, accompanied by Mr. Velu and Mr. Gunasekaran, inspected the site in the Kouthi Hills reserve forest area , which has been allotted to the Tamil Nadu Industrial Minerals Corporation for extraction of iron ore.
