Parents, students allege violations by college

Staff Reporter

‘Authorities of Bangalore college charging exorbitant fees’

College has no affiliation with hospitals to provide practical experience, say parents

‘Students forced to do household chores; those who resist are cruelly dealt with’

KASARAGOD: A group of students of the Kalaniketan College of Nursing, Kudlu, Bangalore, and their parents have alleged that the college authorities are charging exorbitant fees, against the promises to them, and the institution lacks infrastructure mandatory for nursing colleges.

They complain that the college authorities are harassing students who question such violations.

At a press conference here on Saturday, K.J. Philip, K. Vasudevan and Augustine Kunnappally, parents, said the college had no hospital affiliated to it to provide practical experience to the students. The prospectus issued to applicants had featured a nearby hospital as affiliated, which is false, Mr. Philip said. The college has no student hostel.

The parents said the college was charging an annual fee of around Rs. 1.2 lakh a student for the B.Sc. nursing course, which was not prevalent in any other college in Karnataka. Moreover, the college authorities were not giving receipt for the full amount.

The authorities had forced students to do household chores and those who resisted were cruelly dealt with, Mr. Augustine said.

The parents said the college had no principal and very few qualified teachers. Those students who protested against the poor conditions were not allowed to go out of the campus. They got the students released with the help of the Karnataka police on January 4.

The parents said they had registered a complaint with the Agrahara police station in Bangalore.
