‘Abducted’ girl restored to parents, thanks to OHRC

Correspondent

CUTTACK: A minor tribal girl of Nuapada district, who was abducted by a Chhattisgarh-based businessman in May 2007, was rescued by the State police recently and handed over to her parents following the intervention of the Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC).

The police action came after the rights panel reprimanded them and directed Nuapada SP to personally pursue the case earnestly.

Alleging police inaction, the girl’s father had earlier threatened to stage a demonstration in front of the State Assembly in Bhubaneswar.

“It was alleged that the police, after registering a missing case, were making no headway to search the girl. Amid allegations that the girl was sold to the businessman, the father of the girl had even threatened to stage a demonstration in front of the Assembly demanding rescue of his daughter,” said OHRC joint secretary P.K. Pattayat.

Directive to police

Basing on newspaper reports, the OHRC took suo motu cognizance of the matter and called upon the Nuapada SP to pursue the case and furnish a report stating the result of the investigation.

“Accordingly, the SP recently filed his report stating that the girl has been rescued and restored to her parents while the accused person has been sent to jail after arresting him on kidnapping charge,” Mr. Pattayat said.

According to the case, a Chhattisgarh trader Rakesh Yadav allegedly kidnapped the 14-year-old daughter of Benudhar Majhi of Gosalapada village under Khariar police station on May 13, 2007. When the matter was reported, the Khariar police allegedly appeared nonchalant.

Restoring the faith of the people in the criminal justice system, OHRC Chairman Justice R.K. Patra concluded the proceedings of the case on Wednesday after receiving the report of the Nuapada SP, sources in the OHRC said.
