They seek hike in monthly allowance Want adequate security at hospitals BERHAMPUR: House surgeons of three government medical colleges in the State have threatened to go on strike if their monthly allowance is not increased. Since five years they have been getting Rs. 2,850, says the House Surgeons’ Association (HSA), adding that the meagre amount is nothing but degrading their professional skills. HAS spokesperson Bireswar Jyotishi said that as per the new labour laws, a skilled labourer would get Rs. 135. It was high time the government provided at least the daily wage being given to a skilled labourer to house surgeons. He said that house surgeons work in every field of medical care, including outdoor, indoor, casualty and even in rural medical centres, for the meagre allowance and wanted that it be increased to at least Rs. 6,000 a month. The Orissa Medical Teachers’ Association also supported the demand of house surgeons. In Assam, house surgeons get Rs. 7,200 per month, in West Bengal Rs. 6,200 and in Jharkhand Rs. 5,500. Members of the HSA also wanted the government to initiate legal action against persons involved in manhandling of doctors and medical staff on duty. They also wanted adequate security at hospitals to avoid any kind of mischief by miscreants.
