Villagers insist on conducting the sport at any cost

Madurai Collector directed to leave for New Delhi

Court to be requested to take up matter on Monday

MADURAI: The State Government on Saturday decided to file a review petition before the Supreme Court, to reconsider the order refusing to stay the ban on jallikattu.

According to official sources, the Government has instructed Madurai Collector S.S. Jawahar to leave for New Delhi and prepare a review petition in consultation with lawyers representing the State. The court would be requested to take up the matter on Monday.

Meeting

The decision was pursuant to a meeting between the Collector and jallikattu organisers on Saturday morning. It was organised to elucidate the Supreme Court order. But the villagers refused to relent and insisted on conducting the sport at any cost. Their views were conveyed to top officials in Chennai.

Jallikattu organisers, bull owners, tamers and other residents of Alanganallur and Palamedu near here decided to go on a hunger strike from Sunday to urge the Government to take effective steps to end the stalemate and pave the way for smooth conduct of the event during Pongal celebrations.

Shops owners in both the villages put up the shutters on Saturday to attract the attention of the Government to the sentiments attached to the sport.

Shops closed

Nearly 400 shops in Alanganallur and Palamedu remained closed. Posters were pasted across the villages seeking lifting of the ban.

P. Rajasekaran, convener of the Tamizhaga Veeravilayattu Kuzhu, said: “We are totally in disagreement with the Supreme Court order banning the sport. We have full faith in the Chief Minister and urge him to find out a solution to the stalemate.”

D. Regupathy, one of the organisers of the Alanganallur jallikattu, said, “The sport is associated with Pongal from time immemorial. It will be a black Pongal for hundreds of villagers if the sport is not conducted this year. We shall not allow that to happen.”

Superintendent of Police T.S. Anbu and Sholavandan MLA P. Moorthy attended the meeting.
