One litre of kerosene for 40 lakh cardholders

Staff Reporter

Deletion of bogus cards helps to save sufficient quantity of kerosene

Wheat flour will soon be sold through PDS outlets

KANCHEEPURAM: One litre of kerosene will be issued every month to 40 lakh family cardholders, who have been denied kerosene during the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime, Food Minister E.V. Velu said on Friday.

Talking to reporters here, he said the Cabinetm which had recently, took the decision as the Civil Supplies Department saved sufficient quantity of kerosene every month by weeding out bogus ration cards, distributing free liquefied petroleum gas connections and reducing the quantum of kerosene supplied to those with single LPG cylinder.

Asked about the disruption in the supply of kerosene in certain areas, Mr. Velu said that by and large, the supply had been streamlined, and efforts were being made to ensure smooth supply wherever there were problems.

Mr. Velu said wheat flour would soon be sold through Public Distribution System outlets. “Dhoor dhal,” “rava” and “maida” were being sold at the shops, together with other commodities, to check the rise in their prices in the open market.

Earlier, launching the official website of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department ( www.consumer.tn.gov.in) during the Consumer Right Day celebrations, he said consumer associations were being formed in schools to spread awareness of consumer rights.

Food adulteration

Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan urged students to create awareness among the people, especially rural masses, of the ill effects of food adulteration and the methods to detect them by organizing camps with the help of consumer groups.

Civil Supplies Commissioner K. Rajaraman highlighted the importance of getting bills for products purchased. This, he said, would help consumers sue traders/manufacturers in case the products were spurious or of inferior quality.
