Madurai marathon to be held today

MADURAI: The Madurai Marathon event 2008 is an effort to highlight the importance of traditional water resources and the urgent need to preserve them. The organisers of the event are expecting a large turnout for the event to be held on Sunday.

Students, members of self-help groups, farmers and general public are expected to participate in a half marathon, mini-marathon and walk.

A run for differently abled and an event for roller-skating enthusiasts will also be organised. Banks, Madurai Corporation and educational institutions are supporting the event, which is coordinated by Dhan Foundation.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Chinnapillai, leader of Kalanjiam Movement, appealed to the public to participate in the event showcasing solidarity towards saving water bodies.

The multifaceted Manohar Devadoss will flag off a walk for the differently abled. Vayalagam Movement president, Duraisamy, will inaugurate the half-marathon. Ms. Chinnapillai will inaugurate a walk for a cause.

The Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, will inaugurate the mini-marathon.

The runners will start from Madurai Medical College ground and touch Kuruvikaran Salai, East Masi Street, Narimedu Main Road and Alagarkoil Road and to return to the MMC ground, via K. K. Nagar and Anna Bus stand.

The marathon events would start at 7 a.m. and conclude by 9 a.m.
