PMK celebrates Pongal with elders from different religions
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Stressing on the pan-Tamil character of Pongal, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) celebrated the event by inviting elders from different religions here on Saturday.
Agreeing with religious leaders’ appeal to forge communal amity and a casteless society, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said it was everybody’s responsibility to see that Tamil Nadu remained peaceful. Education must impart moral and ethical values to students. Parents too played an important role. Tamils must lead a peaceful life by exchanging love and cultural values.
Santhalinga Ramasamy Adigal of Kayilai Gurumani Perur Adheenam said present day leaders lacked genuine leadership qualities, and commended Dr. Ramadoss for leading a movement to safeguard Tamil language, music and culture.
Archbishop of Chennai-Mayilai A.M. Chinnappa recalled that Dr. Ramadoss stood with the Christian community in difficult times.
Bishop Ezra Sargunam said there was no caste or community-based divisions in the ancient Tamil society. Tamil Nadu Chief Khazi Mohammed Ayub said there was a blood relation binding the entire humanity. Folk songs, dance and discussions marked the PMK’s Samathuva Pongal Vizha. It also featured a “fully furnished” dwelling unit of a farmer, complete with a roofless make-shift bathroom.
