Technical-level talks on for interlinking rivers

NWDA identifies 30 links for feasibility reports

T.N. Government proposal included in coastal plan


TIRUPUR: Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz has said that technical-level discussions on the fifth priority link namely Godavari (Polavaram) - Krishna (Vijaywada) “are also being held” with the concerned States in ‘consensus group’.

Explaining the progress on interlinking of rivers, in a reply to Coimbatore MP, K. Subbarayan, he said that the interlinking of rivers was being pursued with focus on peninsular component and five peninsular links had been identified as priority links for consensus building between the concerned States.

He recalled that the National Common Minimum Programme of United Progressive Alliance Government envisaged a comprehensive assessment of feasibility of linking of rivers starting with southern rivers. Prof. Soz said that the works for preparation of detailed project report (DPR) of one priority link viz Ken-Betwa under peninsular component had been taken up by the National Water Development Agency (NWDA) after the signing of a tripartite agreement between the Central Government, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh governments.

He further said that draft memoranda of understanding for the preparation of DPRs of three other priority links namely Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal link, Damanganga-Pinjal and Par-Tapi-Narmada link had also been forwarded to concerned States for conveying their concurrence of the same.

Schemes

He said that the NWDA had identified 30 links for preparation of feasibility reports. On schemes for anti-erosion measures, Prof. Soz said that the proposal of the State Government for Rs. 167.69 crore was included in the National Coastal Protection Plan. The proposal include construction of 13.824 km of sea walls/groins in various places.
