MADURAI: To commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, 150th year of the ‘First War of Indian Independence’ and 60th year of Indian Independence, ‘Niradhar Darshan’ exhibition opened at the Gandhi Memorial Museum here on Saturday.

Inaugurated by Collector S.S. Jawahar, the exhibition is an effort at showcasing the strength and determination of Indians with a series of visuals and documents — from the European invasion to the era of Independence — by taking them through the watersheds in modern Indian history.

‘Niradhar Darshan’ was officially inaugurated on August 9 last in Mumbai to commemorate the 65th year of the Quit India Movement.

Awesome visuals

The exhibition has large pictures of freedom fighters and martyrs’ memorials and wood panels in the form of books. Titled ‘Awesome Twosome,’ Nana Sahib and Tantiya Tope and the 1857 uprising are on display.

The exhibition also has images of Subramania Bharati, Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy and V.O. Chidambaram Pillai.

A large model of the charkha, which was used by Gandhi as a symbol of indigenous textile production, a quill in an ink bottle, which served as metaphors for memories and the people producing them, and an identical set of uniform of Netaji Subas Chandra Bose are kept at the exhibition.

According to organiser Arun Maruti Muk from Mumbai, the project has been funded by the Centre and the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government of Maharashtra, which prepared the exhibition sets, visuals and documents.

The exhibition will be on till January 16 between 10.a.m. and 6.00 .p.m.
