DEMAND: MDMK general secretary Vaiko (left) led the fast at Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district on Friday.
TUTICORIN: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres, led by party general secretary Vaiko, observed fast at Kovilpatti, near here, on Friday to press their charter of demands.
The agitators demanded that the government take steps on a war footing to overcome the fertilizer shortage existing in the State.
Adequate quantity of fertilizers should be distributed as per the needs of farmers at attractive rates to enhance production and productivity of various crops.
There should be a curb on unannounced power cuts, which was affecting the life of the common man. Due to power cuts, irrigation was affected.
The cadres said the government should take stringent action against rampant illegal sand mining in the State.
The Centre should increase the minimum support price of paddy to Rs 1,000 per quintal as it was done in the case of wheat. The production cost of paddy and wheat was almost the same, but paddy production required more labour and, hence, an increase in the MSP was essential to commensurate with the production cost.
