Demonstrators arrested, released
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Nearly 540 persons, including 260 women, belonging to Thoufeeq Jamath were arrested in a preventive measure and later, released on Friday for staging a demonstration in violation of the regulatory order in the city.
Police said the demonstration was held near Memorial Hall against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the city next week.
A meeting of senior police officers was also held on Friday to discuss arrangements for the visit. City Police Commissioner Nanchil G. Kumaran said that no demonstration would be allowed in the city during Mr. Modi’s visit. No permission had been granted to anybody to stage any kind of protest, he added. Minority and secular organisations in the State have planned to hold a black-flag demonstration to prevent Mr. Modi from addressing a meeting during his visit.
Volunteers belonging to the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Federation of Christian organisations and the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, who had formed a front, had earlier stated that Mr. Modi, who would be here to participate in a private function, would not be allowed to address the meeting. Mr. Kumaran said: “We do not want to have any law and order problem. We have made elaborate security arrangements. We will be taking precautions and no demonstrations will be allowed.”
