BANGALORE: Governor Rameshwar Thakur, on Saturday, presented the Swami Vivekananda State Youth Awards 2006-07 to 10 individuals and two organisations for their voluntary service and contributions to society.

Mr. Thakur lauded the achievements of young people and said: “Youth is the wealth of the country. It is imperative that the youth be brought to the mainstream of national reconstruction. A nation that encourages talent in the youth will create a happy future for itself.”

He was speaking at the award presentation function organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports at the Banquet Hall of the Raj Bhavan.

According to Census 2001, the youth constituted the largest section of the nation.

The youth need to be given a greater say in decision making at all levels. Equally important was the need to develop leadership of young men and women in all spheres and all levels, Mr. Thakur said.

Legislative Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar released “Sadana Sanchike” and hailed the achievements of award winners in various fields such as health, education, law, community development, sanitation, and rural development programmes.
