University signs pact to develop pharma park

Medicinal plants to be cultivated for the purpose

TIRUNELVELI: The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday with Alathur Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (APMA) in Kancheepuram district to set up a natural products research centre and herbal pharma park on its premises at Abhishekapatti.

The university will provide land for the proposed pharma park for cultivation of medicinal plants, which will be bought by the pharmaceutical units.

The setting up of an ‘animal house’ will help university researchers to perform pharmacological and toxicological studies of novel drugs to be developed in the proposed research centre, to be set up with a plinth area of 2,000 sq ft on an outlay of Rs.20 lakh. The sum will be provided by APMA.

A project proposal on the development of new drugs will be sent soon to the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, and state-of-the-art instruments will be procured for the research. The agreement will also enable post-graduate and research scholars of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry to get training in various pharmaceutical units’ research and development wings.

While the university will get 60 per cent of the net profit (technological charges) of thes venture (40 per cent to the university and 20 per cent to the inventor), the industries (APMA) will get the remaining profit. The net profit of the ommercialisation venture will be shared between the industries and the university on 60:40 ratio.

While the university was represented by its Registrar P. Chellathurai in signing the documents, APMA was represented by its secretary, S. Lakshminarayanan.

Vice-Chancellor Cynthia Pandian and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry S. Gopalakrishnan, Syndicate members and heads of various university departments were present.
