MYSORE: Mysore City Corporation (MCC) conducted a workshop for Pourakarmikas at a three-star hotel recently. Five Pourakarmikas (including three women) representing each of the nine zones, participated in the workshop, which focused on education, health of children of Pourakarmikas and upgrading their standard of living. Inaugurating the workshop, Commissioner, MCC Manivannan said that he would henceforth conduct such workshops once in three months for Pourakarmikas. EducationHe said that about Rs. 3.3 crore meant for the welfare of the Pourakarmikas and their families had not been utilised for the past few years. He said educating their children was of primary importance and that the corporation would take full responsibility of educating their children in the best educational institutions. However, he said that it was necessary for the children of Pourakarmikas to study hard by making use of the facilities available to them and to score more than 70 per cent to get entry into institutions of repute. Mr. Manivannan said that it was not necessary for the children of Pourakarmikas to follow their parents and they could study medicine and engineering like any other child of their age. When Pourakarmikas appealed to Mr. Manivannan to open exclusive schools for their children, he advised them against segregating their children and instead join the mainstream of society.
