Nearly 12,250 mothers to benefit from the scheme The kits, worth Rs. 825, will be distributed free of cost to parents of each newborn CHAMARAJANAGAR: "Madilu", a scheme under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), is being launched to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in the district for people living below the poverty line (BPL). BenefitsReleasing the Madilu kit here on Thursday, the zilla panchayat president said nearly 12,250 mothers would benefit from the scheme. She said a target of distributing 3,800 Madilu kits has been set in the district. KitsThe kits, worth Rs. 825, will be distributed free of cost to parents of each newborn child. It will contain 19 essential items for the benefit of child and the mother. StipulationIt will be available only to those who undergo delivery in government hospitals or primary health centres through registered midwives in rural areas. Monetary benefitsThe Janani Suraksha Yojane, under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), is also being implemented in the district. It provides monetary benefits for each birth for families living below the poverty line. The benefits of these schemes will not be available to those who undergo delivery in private hospitals. A mother belonging to the BPL category will get Rs. 500 after a delivery at home and Rs. 700 if it is at a health centre or hospital. Financial helpSpeaking on the occasion, District Health Officer Suresh Shapeti said under NRHM, a mother will get financial aid of Rs. 1,500 if she has emergency surgery at the time of delivery. He said the kit contains a medium-sized mat, soap, mosquito net, towels, toothpaste and brush, blanket, rubber sheet, bed sheet, sweater and socks, baby powder for the child, among other things. DelayHe said the implementation of the Madilu scheme was delayed in the district due to non-availability of kits. Though the Health Department needed 3,880 kits, only 325 kits were distributed under the scheme. He said the remaining kits were distributed within a week. Later, a workshop was organised on the implementation of the schemes in the district. Zilla panchayat member Niranjan Kumar was present.
