A new step towards progress: Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy taking the wheel at a function organised for flagging off the 15 semi low floor town buses on Saturday. Coimbatore: State Minister for Rural Industries, Pongalur N. Palanisamy flagged off 15 semi low floor town buses of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Coimbatore Division on select town bus routes in the City at a function held at the Gandhipuram bus stand on Saturday. The function was attended by Mayor, R. Venkatachalam, Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan, Managing Director of the TNSTC, K. Jegannathan and General Manager of TNSTC Ponraj. The semi-low floor buses would have two steps for boarding the bus as against the earlier three steps thus proving to be comfortable and convenient for aged persons, children and women. The air suspension coach buses are fitted with automatic doors in both the entrances thus completely eliminating the scope for foot-board travel. Independent seats for individuals made of fibre cushion would give an added comfort during the journey. These buses are run with eco-friendly and pollution free Bharat Stage III engines. Buses have been launched on select routes. The minimum fare on these buses would be Rs 5. Mr.Ponraj said that 25 luxury AC buses would be operated on long distance buses very shortly. Already two luxury AC buses have been flagged off on the Coimbatore – Chennai route.
